9 misconceptions about the running vest

This is how retail pro and ultrarunner Marcus Rodre uses his running vest.

9 misconceptions about the running vest

Marcus Rodre works as a store manager at Hanson Concept Store in Åre. When he’s not assisting customers in the store or supporting his staff, he enjoys trail running in the mountains at home in Åre, but also beyond Sweden’s borders.

Marcus has completed the 100K race during Fjällmarathon Week three years in a row and Kullamannen 100 Miles. Abroad, he hasn’t shied away from tough challenges such as Nøsen Hundreds 103 km, Fyri Ultra Trail 56K, and Salomon X-reid in Norway, as well as races like Marathon du Mont Blanc 90 km and, not least, TDS by UTMB 148 km in Chamonix.

But how do you actually use a running vest? It can sometimes be confusing, so here Marcus shares his experience and tips – whether you’re a beginner or an experienced runner looking for some useful running vest hacks. Let’s debunk some common myths about running vests.

1. "I don’t need a running vest, I don’t run ultras"

I see the vest as a tool that enables me to carry what I need. It gives me the security to stay out longer. Whether it's 5 km, 50 km, commuting runs, road, trail, or just running to buy some bread, it doesn’t matter, says Marcus.

2. "Size doesn’t matter"

Salomon’s new ADV SKIN running vest comes in 5-liter and 12-liter capacities. The 5-liter version is great for shorter runs in the local area, while the 12-liter version is a safer choice for longer runs where you need to carry more gear.

3. "You can’t breathe properly with a running vest on"

With Salomon’s patented Quick Link system, you can easily adjust the fit to ensure optimal comfort without chafing or pressure on the chest. Super easy! You can also adjust the tightness while running – many loosen the vest on uphill sections and tighten it downhill to minimize bouncing.

4. "Soft flasks get gross and moldy quickly"

The soft flasks are dishwasher-safe, so keeping them clean is easy. If I only use them for water, I simply rinse them and let them dry. If I use sports drinks, I wash them more thoroughly after my run – you can turn the flask inside out and put the cap in the dishwasher to get them perfectly clean.

5. "It’s tricky to take off a running jacket with a vest on"

With the newly designed tunnel pocket on the back of the vest, it's now even easier to quickly grab your jacket when the weather changes. I always wear my Salomon Bonatti trail jacket over my vest since it's designed for this purpose and provides the best weather protection.

6. "The running vest gets gross because you sweat in it"

I find that the vest stays fresh for a long time thanks to good ventilation. But of course, I wash it in a laundry bag in the machine from time to time.

7. "The running vest bounces like a bowling ball on my back"

The new “Y-construction” on the back reduces bouncing, making the vest feel more like part of your body, which enhances the running experience. Definitely a great upgrade!

8. "Running vests are only for trail and ultra runners"

Running vests are for everyone! Whether you’re running, cycling, skiing 2 km or 20 km, it doesn’t matter. Even in the city, it’s handy for carrying your phone, keys, and water.

9. "The vest is uncomfortable and chafes"

The new mesh fabric against the skin is soft and comfortable while absorbing sweat well. A major improvement over previous Salomon ADV SKIN models.
