Guide: Dress right; layer upon layer

The ski season is long and from Christmas to Easter temperatures can vary greatly. Dressing in layers and varying your clothing according to the day's conditions will make your days on the slopes more comfortable and improve your skiing. Here are some tips on how to stay warm and dry during your winter adventures.

Guide: Dress right; layer upon layer

A sunny spring day

On warm days, choosing the right clothes can be particularly tricky. Of course, dressing for the weather also applies on sunny, warm days, and on these days the ‘layering principle’ is a good starting point. This way, it's easy to put on or take off clothes if the weather changes quickly, as it often does in the mountains.

Layer 1: Base layer

Syntheticbase layers and socks are warm and breathable. The first layer against your body should act as a second skin and help you maintain your body's natural temperature.

Layer 2: Mid-layer

Over your base layer you should wear a mid-layer jumper. A garment that you can easily take off and pack in your rucksack if you get too warm. It's important that this is not too tight so it can easily transport moisture and heat.

Layer 3: Ski and Snowboard Jackets

A flexible jacket that keeps the wind out. Depending on the weather and where you go on the mountain, there are different jackets with different features - so you can find the one that's right for you.

A slightly colder January morning

Clear blue skies and snow-covered trees, January mornings look magical - until you look at the thermometer. Don't stay inside just because it's cold, choose the right clothes and go out and enjoy winter! To stay warm on cold days, it's best to dress in layers, as the air between the garments will act as extra insulation.

Layer 1: Wool base layer

A well-fitting wool base layer and socks are the best foundation for a warm outfit. The fibres of wool bind a lot of air and provide good thermal insulation.

Layer 2: Warming mid-layer

You should wear a midlayer over your base layer for cold, chilly days. Fleece and merino woolgarments are warm and cosy and are perfect for layering. If you have an unlined outer garment, an insulating jacket is the best option - either down or synthetic.

Layer 3: Liner

On extra cold days, an extra layer may be needed to keep the cold from getting to you! Under your regular gloves and your outer jacket, it can be nice to have a liner garment. The liner acts as an extra layer and is an important garment for heat regulation. Liner can come in the form of anything from a jacket to thin extra gloves.

Layer 4: Ski and Snowboard Jackets
When the weather is bitterly cold, a warm and breathable ski and snowboard jacket is essential when the weather is bitterly cold. The outer jacket should be breathable while still providing good insulation. Just as important as keeping the heat in is transporting it. A lined jacket with Gore-Tex is preferable and a hood can be useful to keep out cold wind.
